In partnership with OMSI, Moda proudly invites you to learn the inspiring story of Nelson Mandela, human rights icon and global advocate for change. Mandela: The Official Exhibition, which runs through February 2022 at OMSI, tells Mandela's life story through personal belongings never previously seen outside of South Africa.

You'll witness Mandela's humble beginnings herding cattle in a rural village and watch his transformation from a lawyer and rising activist in the fight against apartheid to his decades of imprisonment, liberation and election as South Africa's first Black president. The global exhibition includes artifacts and unique insights from the people and places that shaped his life and helped define his personality, philosophy, leadership style and legacy.

Reconnecting to the community

To reconnect with the local Black community, OMSI is creating exhibits that appeal to people and communities of different backgrounds to exchange ideas and gain access to equitable learning opportunities.

"OMSI knew it would be imperative to connect with Portland's African American community and present the life of Nelson Mandela," said Moda's Karis Stoudamire-Phillips, who serves on OMSI's Community Advisory Council. "The partnership was successful with community members pushing for highlighting of the Anti-Apartheid Movement in Portland. OMSI not only included this important movement, but also worked with the community to feature local African American trailblazers in STEAM, government, education and more. The exhibit is a must see!"

STEAM is a program created by OMSI and First Tech Fed that features Black Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) professionals sharing their stories and contributions to help pave the way for the next generation. Listen to their inspiring stories here.
